As a devoted fan of Wings of Fury i would like to make some comments about this remake. Although the graphics look very good and the video is quite impressive, i dont know if the transition from 2D to 3D (2.5D to be more precise) will benefit this game. The controls look accurate on the video, however i cant tell for sure unless i play the game.
Like another remake i played a while ago the soldiers are not implemented in the game. Shooting those tiny little jap's was half the fun!
I tried once to make a remake of WOF (i failed misserably btw)and besides adding all the usual stuff (planes, A/A bunkers etc) i had this crazy idea of a dynamic battlefield, with battles taking place on the whole map, shifting the outcome of the war depending not only from the players successes but from his loses as well. For example if you had a mission to destroy a column of tanks with infantry support (tanks, that may well be a new enemy!) and you failed to complete your mission, then the enemy could capture one of your bases!
I'm fully aware that my ideas are stretching WOF to another level, beyond a faithfull remake, but it would be nice to make a more tactical than arcadey version of this glorious game.
Anyway, keep it up and i hope a beta would be out very soon!
P.S How about instead of fighting as an American, fighting as a Japanese? That would be so sweeeet!
Hello makis! Keeping the spirit of the original game was our main goal . The whole logic of the game remained in 2D. On the movie you can see a scene where the camera is rotated[the plane is shooting rockets] . However we put this just to show how the game graphics looks like. In normal gameplay the projection remains flat[like on screenshots].
The japs are implemented:) You can notice them in the first gallery of screenshots. They are pretty nasty though and keep rebuilding those bunkers[if they manage to reach them that is].
The controls use the same idea [and even keys] as the original game so no worries here. Optionally you can invert up/down keys[to have a more simulator-like feel].
Your idea of dynamic battlefield is tempting , however you must be aware that would involve starting a completly new project. We are aiming in something that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. The whole team works on this project in our free time so we cannot support this idea at this moment.
We would like to cooperate with our fanbase. Hence we made the game-engine flexible. Lots of features can be adjusted in the configuration file. These things include: planes speed, guns range , rate of fire etc.
We were also planning a simple level editor for the game.
There was an idea , that after finishing all levels you could fly Japan Zero. We will think about it:) However it would be hard to explain why Japan-player would attack islands on the Pacific.
A new video is baking up which will show some new graphical features so stay tuned.
At the start of the war in the pacific the Japanese attacked and captured a whole range of islands. There were some fierce fighting in the island of Guadalcanal with the americans attacking and capturing some importand japanese base including the infamous Henderson Field airport and and the japs trying desperately to fight back and recapture the airport. There was heavy fighting on land, sea and air during that time.Playing as the japs, flying a Mitsubishi Zero A6M2 (propably the most beautifull plane ever built!) the player's mission is to annihilate the Americans and gain control of the islnd once again. How about adding a bit of blood when the player kills the soldiers? That would be nice!
In the original game from time to time an enemy plane appeared on the map attempting to sink the aircraft carrier with torpedoes. It would be nice to include this in the remake as well. How about adding another plane (a G4M Betty for example) bombing your ship from high alltitude! Oh BTW when the beta is coming out ? I'd love to play this game!
